Our little town in so cal implemented its first controlled burn earlier this year. It took her Herculean effort from my old boss / the local water gm... Shouldn't take this much process and procedure
There's something so darkly poetic about wildfires coming through an area that's still waiting on the permits for the controlled burns. How dare the wildfire skip the line and not file its paperwork.
I don't live somewhere that's subject to that particular problem, but I do get to occasionally see a local indigent woman beaten by tweens, and the cops afterward ruthfully telling me that we don't have any shelters. I know why we don't have any shelters, it's because we're really concerned about being careful about these things. So very careful.
Have you read Casey Handmer's writing on this? It expresses a certain level of disgusted rage that I think is well deserved. It's easy to think of these things as abstruse or boring or not terribly interesting. And they are, when they work. When they don't work, people die and our future is broken.
I’m a fourth generation Californian and one of the reasons I don’t live in my beautiful California anymore is the myopic narrow focused procedural mentality I say growing there way back when I got my humanities degree from Berkeley.
